Inga Genis: Biography

Born in New York, Inga returned with her parents to their home in the Netherlands while still a baby. When she was seven years old, she and her family emigrated to Australia, settling on nine acres of beautiful bushland on the outskirts of Sydney. Inga grew up surrounded by nature and as a daughter of lithographer Fred Genis, met many inspirational artists throughout her childhood. Inga has had over 30 years’ experience in the jewellery trade, which began in the early 90s with a four year apprenticeship. During that time she honed her craft as a manufacturing jeweller specialising in goldsmithing. Along the way she studied many aspects of the trade, which included a two year jewellery design course in Sydney. More study followed and in early 2000, she was awarded a Diploma in Gemmology and a certificate in diamond grading from the Gemmological Association of Australia (GAA). Having gained these qualifications, Inga was then entitled to further her study through the GAA to become a qualified registered jewellery valuer. With her studies completed, Inga spent many years working as an in-house jeweller for a number of exclusive jewellery companies in Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne and Brisbane. She has successfully run her own jewellery business, designing, making and repairing jewellery for her own clientele. Specialising in engagement and wedding rings, Inga loves turning sketched designs into creative reality. In 1998, a $17,000 platinum and diamond ring she manufactured was selected as a finalist in the prestigious Australian Jewellery Design Awards - a fitting reward for many years of study, creativity and hard work. Since settling in the Byron Bay hinterland with her partner Gary and their two beautiful children Elsa and Reuben, she has created a stunning new range of individually crafted pieces that make up her current body of work. Gathering her inspiration from the beauty of nature, Inga especially loves the complexity of flowers with their geometrical patterns and perfect detail. Inga’s passion for living speaks clearly through her intricate and exquisitely handcrafted jewellery.
